Brass Quintet Arrangement for 'Glory to God' from Mass of Saint Ann

Hey all,

Once again Rory Cooney and I invite you to check out his BRASS QUINTET arrangement of the Glory to God from the Mass of Saint Ann. For a limited time, we are making these parts available for free on Rory's website.

Check it out if you get the chance. If you are bringing in some brass players to sit in during the Easter liturgies, and you are using Mass of Saint Ann, this would be a great addition to the Glory to God.

Thanks again, Rory, for arranging these and allowing people to use them. And thank you also, World Library Publications, for allowing us to make them available.

Some great Lenten songs...

I thought I'd post a few audio (video) clips from this past Sunday, the 1st Sunday of Lent.  There is some beautiful music by some really talented composers.  I'd like to highlight 3 composers with 3 different pieces:

Return to God  by John Angotti and Alan Hommerding (World Library Publications)
This song has it all...easy to sing, simple to play, beautiful, rich lyrics. It's a wonderful song for liturgy and it can be used at various times throughout. (Gathering, Preparation/Offertory, Communion).  From the first lyric: "From ashes to the living font your church must journey, Lord..."  it really sets the tone for Lent.
We chose not to play the written/recorded intro, but instead play the verse instrumentally as an introduction. Here's what it sounded like this past Sunday at our 6pm Mass at Saint Ann's:

Be Merciful, O Lord, For We Have Sinned - different Refrain text for Create a Clean Heart In Me/I Will Rise and Go to My Father by Lorraine Hess (World Library Publications)

Using the same melody, and adding a few eighth notes to the rhythm, we used Lorraine Hess' setting of Psalm 51 and just changed the lyrics in the Refrain. I kept the intro very simple...just played the melody on the piano and kept an eighth note pulse in the LH. I wanted everyone to clearly hear the melody twice before I even sang it.
Take note of how the band plays on this song.  It's a gradual build for both the instruments and the vocals. Everyone does not play right at the beginning.

Christ In Me Arise by Trevor Thomson (spiritandsong.com)
Here is a song that I think will become a standard in may parishes...Trevor Thomson's beautiful 'Christ In Me, Arise.' The Refrain is instantly memorable and inviting, the text is wonderful.  This song works well all year long.  Listen to the song; play through it.  It speaks for itself.  This is one of those songs that seems to receive a lot of positive comments.
Here's how we played it last Sunday for Communion. Simple, nothing fancy. But take note of how it starts and builds from that moment of sacred silence.

Sacred Silence...we need it

Naturally, when we discuss music, we are usually talking about melodies, keys, instrumentation, lyrics, arrangements...everything that has to do with the 'sound' of our music.  That's where we focus our efforts: practicing the notes, the dynamics, the structure, etc.  We can get so caught up in what we're supposed to sound like that we sometimes forget there are times when we shouldn't sound at all.  Sometimes the absence of sound can be just as powerful as the most inspiring music.

Think of some of the movies you've seen.  Is there a constant occurrence of music throughout the entire film? Of course not.  There are moments of complete silence, even when there is no dialogue. Only at the appropriate time does the music comes in and add something new to the scene.

In our liturgies we have 'built-in' moments of silence, and we should honor them...we should keep them sacred: after each reading, the sung Responsorial Psalm, right before the Prayer After Communion...to name a few. It's important, I think, to not 'rush' to fill these quiet times with sound.  Let the words of the Old Testament reading hang there for a bit before you start the Psalm. Don't be afraid to 'not play anything' after a communion hymn. Silent meditation can be just as effective (if not more) as a meditation song. You may even want to ask your priests to consider pausing a little more than usual after everyone has sung the Holy, Holy, Holy, or the Mystery of Faith, or prayed the Lord's Prayer. Sometimes, an added moment of silence can be a nice surprise when we're not used to it. It can actually help us to focus more.

I can't help but think of Tom Booth and Jenny Pixler's beautiful song "Sacred Silence."  Click on the link and take a listen if you've never heard it. (or even if you have!) The music is available on spiritandsong.com
